i’ve been fighting a weird virus so i’m a bit loopy but i keep thinking about how we all have certain things that we love. and the way that people’s eyes light up when they talk about those things. it’s enough to make me squeal!! i want to bottle this preciousness in an antique vial. i want to parade it all about town in an over-the-top float complete with a marching band.
i do think the things we love point toward an inner truth that may have otherwise remained secret. these things are like maps in a way. like maybe we love certain musicians because they awaken a part of us that is begging to come out and play. maybe we love certain books because they sing to us in a language that only our deepest selves fully understand.
i wish i could see your eyes as you talk about things you love. and that you could see mine.. but regardless
here are some things that i love:
♡₊˚ 🦢・₊✧𐦍
i love to be moving. you might be thinking, oh moving houses or cities or countries. and you would be right. but also what i mean is being on transportation, physically in motion (but actually being still) - trains and airplanes specifically. busses too.
i love these things because i put headphones on and reach a state of mind that i never access otherwise, i think about all the things i have never gotten over and find new ways to poke the memories. i lift up the memory-logs and peer under them, watch as bugs scurry about. they are startled by the reveal. the songs are the playlist to the movie of my life (past present future), being shown on a projector inside my brain.
[i wonder how many times i will say love in this newsletter]
another thing i love is when someone checks in on me just to see how i’m doing or because they randomly thought of me. when they send a photo or meme or joke that they know i’d like.. a “this reminded me of you”. or they’re at the farmer’s market and some strange little handmade item made them think about me. or a quote they stumbled across by pure accident, or some unhinged TikTok.
today my sister got my favourite brand of instant noodles (Mie Goreng) and sent me a pic of her holding the package and it made me smile. sweet little ephemera.. how special to be thought of, in a chaotic and random universe like this one!!
i love the works of Jim Henson. it saddens me that he died the year before i was born. i often wonder what wondrous art he would have graced us with, had he still been alive to utilize today’s technologies.. he was so ahead of his time. but his movie The Dark Crystal specifically has forever altered my brain chemistry.
the way the characters are real, actual PUPPETS!! and the eternal lore of good vs evil but done in such a unique way. it’s my comfort movie, i love knowing that it exists. i will never tire of it. whats your comfort movie or show, one that you never tire of?
i love when wild animals trust me enough to come closer. whether it’s chilling with monkeys in Asia (they mostly just wanted to steal my stuff ahaha), or having a tender moment with the neighbourly raccoon by the dumpster. or stray dogs and cats!! i used to spend hours as a kid building these elaborate tent things made of sticks and tarps. i’d put cat and dog food inside to try and lure stray animals, and often it worked. we actually acquired one of our beloved cats that way (his name was Ginger).
whenever i saw a particularly skinny-looking stray dog during my travels, i’d go buy them a meal and sit there while they munched some dinner. they were always so grateful. or i’d buy them fresh water if it was really hot out, and only salty ocean water was around. those are some of my favourite times.
one time i saw elephants in the wild and my friend and i sat there in the dirt holding a special rose quartz crystal as we tried to summon the elephants over with our minds. i’m excited to tell you that it actually worked.. the elephants slowly walked closer and closer and we shared an extra special energetic moment. time stood still. animals are so connected to the invisible energies.
i love poetry and music and art <3 OH MY GOD - i could go on about this forever. but specifically today i want to mention my favourite musical artist BILLIE EILISH because she released a brand new album yesterday! this album has been on repeat in my household.. it’s a truly glorious!
i feel so grateful to get to hear music like this. Billie and her brother Finneas are prodigies of our time.. this album was designed to listen start to finish (no shuffle) so go ahead and do that if you wish!! no worries if not!i love having random chats with strangers. i try to consciously keep my energy open in way that says “yes i’m down to clown or chat or whatever” and often i’ll have these beautiful conversations with people that i never see again. and it always makes my heart all gooey. a few months ago this eccentric man with a wide-brimmed hat with a feather tucked into it approached me.
he had long hair and a white blazer on, and he was pushing a shopping cart full of all his worldly possessions. he told me about how he’s been living under a giant cedar tree. how the boughs keep him dry when it rains, and how much he loves the tree. we talked about how palo santo is our favourite smell. the sun winked down at us.
i love how we are connected through these computers which allow us to talk to people we otherwise may never have known existed. here, we get to share our hearts and thoughts with humans from all over the world, and feel less alone by doing so. i appreciate you being here and reading this little newsletter that i call velvet reverie ⋆°•☁︎⋆
