A POEM IS A MESSENGER FROM THE SPIRIT WORLD
when a poem is born through a human being, everyone involved is changed. the birth-giver, the readers and even [quite remarkably] the energetic field of planet Earth. there is a process for such magic, but you must know the process is eternally shapeshifting.
we give birth to a poem while simultaneously letting it slip through the cracks between our fingers. to catch a poem may kill it, so try to take five steps back. i have created some guidelines below, but note
these instructions may change without warning like
the wind. like love.
like all things.

light five nostalgia-scented candles in your heart’s innermost cavern
let the flames lick the back of your eyelids [try not to be alarmed by this]
wipe dust from your record player and drop the needle where it aches
consider your posture - shoulders back. now forget you have a body
allow your thoughts to form a puddle on the floor
scoop the puddle into an ornate teacup from a vintage store you visited on your favourite road trip
carry this teacup to the nearest empty field
take off your shoes and peer into the swirling, cosmic liquid
keep looking
keep looking
is something taking shape? does it have fangs? or wings? a formless thing, but living?
it is very important that you feed it
from an outstretched hand
now
lead it gently to the page and take five steps back
watch as the words begin to breathe
don’t listen to anybody who tells you how to write a poem

(that’s my word for excellence, BTW,)
Sonja, so many perfect visuals, a weaving of tasks, like a leaf colliding gently with this world and maybe another —falling through until it joins the others—I love how your guidance flittered about, I loved its patience, and I’m in love with the ending line!
So beautifully done, thank you!
